The OAS was founded in 1972 or 1974 depending on the source. It was originally set up as a corporate entity so that its founder Dr. Greg ‘Torque’ Thomas could have a USA-based busines to process grants and commissions for the research being done into autonomous systems, cybernetic ontology, theory and philosophy of intelligence, integrative control systems, digital/analog entanglement interfaces, and farm/agricultural automation. “The Office” still operates today and you can see its original HQ in Santa Fe, NM. It is one of the lesser known of global applied research consultancies.

This is the enamel pin that was given to employees and collaratories after their five-year mark. It has the The Office's stated remit in gold foil print at the bottom and says: “applied speculation in service of global prosperity and sustainable futures.” As near as I can tell the pin has not been worn. The foam in the storage case has a bit of yellowing on the bottom, but the top is clear. The case has light shelf marks from storage; the pin and card are clean and intact. No creases or bent corners. Rare item. The Office of Applied Speculation no longer issues these pins, so this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of cybernetics history.
